An analysis of Trump’s comments on trade practices from our International Editor Chris Stevenson:

“Correcting what he sees as the “unfair” trade practices by the rest of the world against the US has always been part of Mr Trump’s biggest promises. He is clearly happy to take some consequences for reassuring his supporter base that he intends to follow through on this ‘America First’ mantra.

“However, while the president has aimed most of his ire, particularly over steel tariffs and prices, particularly at China – his move to put up tariffs has not just annoyed Beijing. Canada and the EU are preparing counter measures, while Mexico, Brazil and China have said they are considering the same.

“Critics have argued that the move will not protect US jobs and will ultimately push up prices for all consumers. Markets seem to agree, with shares down in both Europe and Asia and the Dow Jones also down 200 points shortly after opening.”
